BetterCredit helps renters build credit toward homeownership by reporting on-time rent payments to the credit bureaus. Because that work involves sensitive financial and identity information, protecting your data is central to how we operate. This policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, how we use and protect it, and the choices you have.

1.Who We Are

BetterCredit (“BetterCredit,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) operates the website at bettercredit.io and the related rent reporting service (the “Service”). The Service is operated by BetterCredit LLC, located in Chicago, IL 60657. We are based in the United States and the Service is intended for United States residents only.

This policy applies to information we collect through the Service. It does not apply to third-party websites or services that we do not control, even if we link to them.

2.Information We Collect

We collect the following categories of information:

Information you provide directly

  • Account information: your name, email address, phone number, and password.
  • Identity information: your legal name, date of birth, and Social Security number. We collect this to verify your identity and to accurately attach your rent history to your credit file, as the credit bureaus require.
  • Tenancy information: your rental address, monthly rent amount, lease dates, and landlord or property manager details.

Information we collect from third parties

  • Banking and transaction data: when you connect a bank account, our provider Plaid shares account and transaction information with us so we can verify your rent payments. See the Plaid section below.
  • Payment information: when you subscribe, our payment processor Stripe collects and processes your card or bank details. We do not store full payment card numbers on our systems.

Information we collect automatically

  • Usage and device data: IP address, browser type, device identifiers, pages viewed, and similar technical information collected through cookies and similar technologies.

3.How We Use Your Information

We use your information to:

  • Provide, operate, and maintain the Service, including reporting your on-time rent payments to the credit bureaus.
  • Verify your identity and prevent fraud, money laundering, and abuse.
  • Verify your rent payments through your connected bank account.
  • Process your subscription and any one-time charges.
  • Communicate with you about your account, reporting status, disputes, and Service updates.
  • Assess, with your participation, whether you may be ready to pursue a mortgage and, where you choose, connect you with a licensed loan officer affiliated with BetterCredit. Any mortgage services are provided under separate disclosures and agreements.
  • Comply with our legal and regulatory obligations, including those under the Fair Credit Reporting Act and applicable financial privacy laws.

4.How We Share Your Information

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only as described below:

  • Credit bureaus and our reporting infrastructure: we share your verified rent payment information with Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion, through our rent reporting infrastructure provider, in order to furnish your payment history to your credit file.
  • Service providers: we share information with vendors who help us run the Service, including identity verification, bank connectivity (Plaid), payment processing (Stripe), email delivery, hosting, and infrastructure. These providers may use your information only to perform services for us.
  • Legal and safety: we may disclose information when required by law, subpoena, or legal process, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of BetterCredit, our users, or others.
  • Business transfers: if BetterCredit is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will require any successor to honor this policy.

5.Credit Reporting & Your FCRA Rights

Once your identity is verified and your subscription is active, we report your on-time rent payments to the credit bureaus. The bureaus independently determine whether and how that information affects your credit score. We do not guarantee any specific change to your credit score or credit profile, and we are not a credit repair organization.

As a furnisher of information to the credit bureaus, we are required to report accurate information and to investigate disputes about the accuracy of what we report. If you believe information we furnished about you is inaccurate, you may dispute it by contacting us at disputes@bettercredit.io. We will investigate and respond within the timeframes required by the Fair Credit Reporting Act. You also have the right to dispute information directly with the credit bureaus.

6.Bank Connections (Plaid)

We use Plaid Inc. (“Plaid”) to connect your bank account and verify your rent payments. By connecting your account, you grant BetterCredit and Plaid the right to access and use the account information made available through your financial institution, consistent with Plaid’s End User Privacy Policy, available at plaid.com/legal. Plaid’s handling of your information is governed by Plaid’s own privacy policy.

7.Payments (Stripe)

We use Stripe to process subscription payments and one-time charges. When you provide payment details, that information is collected and processed by Stripe under Stripe’s privacy policy. We receive limited information from Stripe, such as confirmation of payment and the last four digits of your card, but we do not store full payment card numbers.

8.How We Protect Your Information

We treat your identity and financial data as highly sensitive. Sensitive personal information, including your Social Security number and bank connection details, is encrypted, and access is restricted through role-based controls and audited. We maintain administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect your information.

No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If we become aware of a breach affecting your personal information, we will notify you as required by applicable law.

9.Data Retention

We retain your information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the Service. We also retain certain records, including credit reporting and dispute records, for the periods required to meet our legal, regulatory, and compliance obligations under the Fair Credit Reporting Act and other applicable laws, even after you close your account. When information is no longer required, we delete or de-identify it.

10.Your Choices & Rights

You have the following choices regarding your information:

  • Access and correction: you may review and update most account information from within the Service, or by contacting us.
  • Deletion: you may request that we delete your account and personal information, subject to records we are legally required to keep.
  • Marketing communications: you may opt out of promotional emails at any time using the unsubscribe link. We will still send you service-related messages about your account.

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under state privacy laws, such as the California Consumer Privacy Act, including the right to know what personal information we collect, the right to request deletion, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising your rights. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at privacy@bettercredit.io.

11.Cookies & Tracking

We use cookies and similar technologies to keep you signed in, remember your preferences, secure the Service, and understand how the Service is used. You can control cookies through your browser settings, though disabling them may affect how the Service functions.

12.Children’s Privacy

The Service is intended only for adults aged 18 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you believe a minor has provided us information, please contact us and we will delete it.

13.Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated policy.

14.Contact Us

If you have questions about this policy or how we handle your information, contact us at privacy@bettercredit.io or by mail at BetterCredit LLC, Chicago, IL 60657.

This policy is governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, without regard to its conflict of laws principles.
